Eight kinds of artisans Carpenter Workshop

Origin of the Affinity

Hao Tang Village, a traditional village with a soul of craftsmanship culture, is seeking a balance between tradition and modernity in the wave of rural revitalization. As the core practice of the "Hao Tang Eight Crafts" plan, the carpentry workshop is given a dual mission: not only to carry the inheritance of woodwork skills through space, but also to become a public bond connecting the village, nature and visiting outsiders. Backed by a hillside and flanked by village houses on both sides, the building grows naturally from the land, becoming a light wooden container in the village.

Venue

The building is humbly integrated into the fabric of the village. The east and west sides follow the scale of the farmhouses. The roof adopts a double-curved glulam structure, whose undulating profile engages in a "disconnected yet connected" dialogue with the distant mountains. The arched skylights on the roof are like light fissures in the valley, casting light spots that wander with time inside the building, blurring the boundary between artificial structure and natural rhythm. The angle of the skylights has been optimized through solar simulation to ensure that the workshop does not require artificial lighting during the day. The filtered light enters the interior, creating a uniform and soft "craft light domain". At night, the interior lighting spills out through the skylights, making the roof appear like a suspended light band.

The Curved Revolution of Glued Laminated Timber

The hyperbolic roof adopts a hybrid system of glued laminated timber and steel nodes, with a span of up to 24 meters. Each curved component is digitally modeled and prefabricated in the factory, and then precisely assembled on-site in a "timber block" manner. The curved form not only echoes the natural terrain but also achieves structural self-stabilization, reducing the division of the interior space by internal columns.

Space

The open research and study space that can accommodate a hundred people breaks the closed nature of traditional classrooms. The modular wooden workbenches can be freely combined to meet diverse needs ranging from traditional mortise and tenon teaching to modern wood structure experiments. Tool display racks and material sample libraries are embedded in the walls, with wood planes, ink lines and cross-sections of glued laminated timber juxtaposed, alluding to the evolution of craftsmanship through the ages.
