Tulum Plastic School

This project aims to establish connections with the existing buildings and the past community traditions, and respond to the surrounding environment. The building functions are arranged around the site, with two trees preserved in the center to form a central courtyard. Classrooms, multi-function halls, offices, and bathrooms are all built around the central courtyard.

The entire building is mainly constructed with brick and wood, and recycled plastic and recyclable plastic materials play a crucial role in the architectural design process. The filling materials between the wooden frames fully utilize recycled plastic, with recycled plastic bottles and processed plastic particles filled into the glass components, fully leveraging the lightness and transparency of plastic. Through the different combinations and variations of the walls, the natural courtyard and the rooms interpenetrate each other. Teachers and students of the school can also change the combination of the walls according to the needs of the usage scenarios, altering the functions of the building.

&In the project design, the relationship between the building and the climate was given top priority. To cope with the hot weather in this area, the building walls were designed to be openable, enhancing air convection. To balance the rainy and dry seasons, a rain garden and a rainwater collection well were designed in the central courtyard. During the rainy season, rainwater can be stored and used for watering plants during the dry season. It is hoped that all teachers and students can experience joy and cultural identity in this building.
