Empty Courtyard Homestay

The former Kungting Homestay was once a primary school in Haotang Village. Later, it was abandoned after some changes. There remains a four-story teaching building, a three-story multi-functional building, and a hall in the central courtyard that only has the main structure completed. The site is surrounded by rich vegetation both inside and outside, with a large lotus pond to the south and tall trees such as pines and cypresses on the other three sides. It is a secluded and private place within the village.

After a thorough on-site investigation, we decided to preserve the delicate symbiotic relationship between the buildings and the plants that had developed over a long period of abandonment. We proposed a renovation strategy centered on the theme of "garden within a courtyard, courtyard within a garden". Under the premise of maximizing the preservation of the original vegetation, we used natural and organic materials and a light-intervention approach to create a unique state where nature and architecture interpenetrate.

The homestay is centered around the courtyard and well, creating the atmosphere of "all water converges to the central hall, and the water also brings prosperity". Combined with the carefully maintained relationship between the buildings and the plants, it achieves the spatial spirit of sheltering from the wind, gathering the qi, listening to the rain, and sipping tea. Inside, the rooms are designed to take advantage of the surrounding views, using techniques such as borrowing views, framing views, filtering views, and opposing views to ensure each room has a unique perspective.
